Posture analysis is a tool used by sports therapists to provide them with information on how the clients body is positioned and how the body parts are aligned with others. A clients posture will provide vital information regarding the bodies mechanics and how the body functions on a daily basis. A persons posture expresses how they move, stand and how they function.

A postural assessment will be done before therapy treatments, the client will be observed in all directions to gather accurate results about the clients standing and functional posture, these findings will assist the therapist in identifying any underlining issues with the clients symptoms of pain and injury.

A sports therapist is able to look at the whole issue instead of the area that is in pain, occasionally the pain in your knee is coming from a misalignment in your hip, for example. this is the type of treatment that is vital in all walks of life in order to reduce the current issue and to better the client going forward. solving the whole issue instead of the current issue will hugely increase chances of a reoccurring injury happening.

The types of issues a therapist will be looking for can relate to all parts of the body starting from head to toes, matters such as:

  • Head tilts (protraction)

  • Shoulder level (protraction)

  • Pelvic tilts (anterior & posterior)

  • Hip level (one side higher than other)

  • Knee rotation

  • Ankle tilts (high/low arches)

The above few areas are looked at to give a bigger picture of the current issue the client is suffering with, with these types of issues comes further issues with muscle tightness and pain, for example due to protracted shoulders this can cause the upper back and chest area to become imbalanced due to the over use and fatigue placed upon the upper back causing a rounded posture to form. Once these issues are assessed the therapist is then able to carry out the most effective treatment for the specific issue.
